This point in the night is when most of our regulars come out and do some practicing to get ready for the 100-lap race at 11:00 pm. A lot of great talent showed up to meet Mark and give their support and donations to the March of Dimes. They also had a lot of fun racing against Mark and giving him some pointers along the way in hopes that they would get there mugs on TV as being the best drivers in Texas.

The home stretch has begun. Mark has made it to the top of the hill and now just has to coast his way down to noon. We did not want Mark to get lonely in the middle of the night so we brought along a bunch of our friends to stay up all night with Mark. It was not hard at all to get people to come out in the middle of the night and race for countless hours. So from 12:30-2:30 in the morning we had a Coke Party. Coke-a-Cola donated signs, posters of NASCAR Winston cup drivers, t-shirts for all that showed up, pins, drinks, and cozies. The two-hour Coke party was a huge success. The people who showed up for the Coke party stayed all night long and partied. We even had one driver's club member bring his family along with him and all the comforts of home, in his motor home.

Now if this is not a true race fanatic, I do not know who is. Sigi Rodriguez on the right raced with Mark for 12 solid hours. He showed up for the Midnight Madness race and stayed until 9:30am or so. But the funny thing about it is that Sigi is from Dallas. He came out to Houston to race all night with Mark and then had to drive like 4 hours back to Dallas the next day. Is this a race fan or what?

We did not want our guest to get sleepy on us, so we put together a competition that would help them stay awake. We had 6 teams of two and the object of the game was to have one team member be a blocker and the other head for the finish line, while the other teams were trying to do the same and stop you. This high-spirited competition was as good as caffeine. We also put together little 50 lap races so that it would keep them stay focused on the racing and not sleeping. Throughout the night we had donuts and coffee for everybody so that it would give the weary race fans a sugar rush.

Another one of Mark's co-workers stopped by to show his support for the cause, Don Nelson. He popped in and had cup of coffee with Mark and the rest of the drivers to see how things were going. He was also very curious about the cars, but would not get in and race against Mark. I think all the wrecks that happened in the race early freaked him out.
