OPRY MILLS RACING CENTER HOSTS
AN EVENING OF EXCITEMENT FOR
TENNESSEE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND

"Racing so real you can feel it", the NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway's popular tag line was put to the test as the NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway at Opry Mills hosted Students from the Tennessee School for the Blind on Thursday evening July 11, 2002. The NASCAR Simulation activity earned new fans as these Summer Camp Students and Counselors participated in the NASCAR Racing experience as a part of the Tennessee School for the Blind's annual two week Summer Camp.




This Summer Camp program is designed to give extremely visually impaired/sight challenged and completely blind Youth the opportunity to participate in challenging educational and physical training to improve their day to day life skills. "Racing at the NASCAR Speedway is one of the highlights of the program for the kids", says Frank Alexander, Camp Counselor and Event Coordinator. "They were really excited to come and everyone had a great time, THANK YOU!"

The full motion simulation with virtual reality sights, motion and sounds of a realistic NASCAR driving experience was a big hit with the kids AND adults. "This unique Simulator experience encompasses all senses - not just sight, so if a person cannot see the race track or screen completely, they can still feel what it is like to drive a race car at speeds exceeding 200 MPH. Driving a vehicle is something they would NEVER be allowed to do in real life" explained Jeff Carden, Regional Director of Sales for NASCAR Speedways. "All the kids really enjoyed themselves and it was a pleasure to host these grateful kids!", he says.

The Staff and Crew of the Speedway took a few extra steps to provide a safe environment for these challenged Youth to maximize their enjoyment of the Racing experience but otherwise it was business as usual. "After the first race these kids drove better than some adults in their first Simulator experience", commented one Crew Member.
